Caleb Corey, educator and inventor

Caleb Corey

Caleb has always been a passionate student, educator, and inventor. Coming from a homeschooled background, he was always taught to drive his knowledge forward. Being a quick learning autodidact from an early age, Caleb entered community college at the age of 15, and obtained his first college degree before graduating high school at 17.

A lifelong and highly accomplished dancer, at age 11 Caleb was sufficiently skilled in rhythm tap to begin what would become a highly successful teaching career. Within a year his student base had grown to over forty children and adults, in both private and group class settings. Often performing with his brother Nick, they developed a unique tacit style of polyrhythmic choreography that became a trademark of the duo. In 2004 Caleb was invited for an extended stay in Brazil to perform with a group of touring artists, as well as visit small schools to introduce local young artists to new dance and musical styles. Over the years he has worked and shared the stage with many professionals, taught both locally and abroad, competed at a national level, choreographed and performed numerous original numbers, and appeared on national television. At 15 he began offering swing dance classes, both in his own program and as a volunteer service to local high schools.

As a youth, Caleb was fascinated by the arts of the worlds greatest illusionists, which lead him to pursue mastery of many advanced sleight of hand techniques. Having very limited access to instructional material or networking opportunities in the subject, he was forced to reverse engineer most of what he saw from the ground up. In the end, this approach provided Caleb a deeply fundamental understanding of magical theory, and inspired him to innovate new illusions for both close up sleight of hand and large scale stage production. In 2006, Caleb was invited to attend the FISM international magic convention in Stockholm, Sweden where he was able to network with magicians around the globe on many subjects related to the craft and further develop his knowledge of effect design. Combining his knowledge of magic and illusion with that of theater and stage, has placed Caleb in a position of high demand designing custom illusions, props and mechanical effects in various theater productions around the PNW.

Caleb is also a passionate musician. As a child, he actively taught himself absolute pitch, and over the years has been able to successfully add 15 instruments to his repertoire. In 2012 he obtained a bachelor’s Degree in Jazz piano and Performance from Cornish College of the arts. Multi-instrumental skill gives Caleb the versatility to be a leader, or team player in many different musical circles. His skills also include the ability to compose, improvise, transcribe, and arrange music in from a wide range of genres. Caleb has been an integral participant the theater pits of over 50 musical and stage productions, accompanied many local performers in ensembles/auditions, and has been teaching and inspiring local musicians of all ages for nearly 10 years through one on one lessons.

Caleb, along with his family, has been strongly active in the Seattle theater scene since 2001. He has put countless hours in to helping build and enhance many of the northwest’s theater programs, often as a volunteer. In local theatre, Caleb soon found himself indispensable, having the skills to work in nearly any area of theater from production to performance. Many of these hours were put in to help build his family's award winning arts program, Ballyhoo Theater, which recently received an award for work with local LGBT youth. He has worked as a musical director, choreographer, actor, pit musician/conductor, sound engineer, prop maker, set builder, practical special effects designer, video designer, event producer, and in many other auxiliary roles. Primary theaters worked/volunteered with: Cornish’s PONCHO Hall, BHS theatre arts, Driftwood Players, Ballyhoo Theater, Seattle Musical Theater, Seattle Children's Theatre, Civic Light Opera.

Besides teaching, his current focus is aimed at designing and producing digital tools for students, instructors, and creators of all types. He and his collaborators are working on projects such as specialized gamification software, networking systems and media platforms. In a world where access to both quality educational tools and gainful opportunities in the arts are often limited, technology offers some of the most promising and innovative possibilities to provide anyone with passion a chance to pursue their craft.
